Water

| The two sources of water for the City are East Canoe Creek and Shuswap Lake. Water used from East Canoe Creek is gravity fed to the reservoirs while from Shuswap Lake the water must be pumped up to the 11 reservoirs throughout the city where the water is stored and distributed through the water mains and lines. The flushing of water mains, water lines and the cleaning of reservoirs is continuous all year long. Water main breaks and leaks can happen at any time and during repair the water may have to be shut down. Testing of the water is done regularly as per the guidelines from the Interior Health Authority. The City has installed over the last couple of years a new SCADA computer program system which monitors the water system for reservoir levels, temperature, usage, flows and testing. All the fire hydrants in the city are serviced once a year and new fire hydrants are installed as needed by the utility department. Upgrading and installation of new water lines are done as the city continues to grow. |
Sewer | The sewer lines are gravity fed to sewer lift stations at various locations in city and from there the sewage is pumped the pollution control centre for treatment. The sewer lines are flushed continually throughout the year and the lift stations are checked/cleaned/washed each week to ensure there are no back up problems. The SCADA computer program also monitors the sewer system for levels, problems and stores data on usage, flows etc. |
Storm | The storm lines are flushed continually and the catch basins are cleaned to ensure there are no problems with run off water that could cause flooding. |
